Kim Kardashian won’t make you successful

Kim Kardashians success doesn’t equal yours. Here is why I felt I needed to point this out:

I just checked the Google trends and I picked 5 search terms that I compared to each other. Entrepreneurship, studying, self-help books, personal development and Kim Kardashian. Which one was most searched by far? Our beloved Kim K. I actually have nothing against Kim K and her gang. To be honest they are resourceful as fuck and considering where it all started at they smart AF. They might not seems so, but they have so much money and they have been able to follow and build trends like no else. I can’t help but feel a bit jelly. So if you search them to learn how to build an empire go ahead! However there is a reason why I am worried.

So what makes this worrisome? The fact that I am willing to bet quite a bit of money that most of these people search for Kim K. for one of these reasons; body goals, make up, fashion, comparison, juicy scandals.

Now if this is just once a year to see how their business is doing or what they do to keep their bodies like they are (apart for operations, let’s be honest here….) then fine. However a lot of people look up to them and not all of these people see the big picture. And I feel like we could spend our time way better.

Kim K is just one example. We could change the name to any other celebrity. So instead of spending time on studying, self-help or figuring out how to be entrepreneurial or building a career, we check out what the person who is tooootally on their own journey is doing? I know everyone says that we shouldn’t compare ourselves to others. I believe we can learn a lot from others. For example it motivates me to compare myself to someone who’s past is way darker and harder, seeing them succeed makes me see how stupidly many excuses I have. My example is: Lisa Nichols . It makes me realize that chances are I will have it easier to succeed. This doesn’t come from an ego place. This comes from the realization that I have better circumstances that those who I look up to. Poverty isn’t an issue for me. We are an average family. Not rich per say, but definitely privileged. But even with me looking up to these people I want to build my own journey. Meaning I will research everything for myself. Sure I can read their bio or watch an interview. But I am not blinded and so concentrate on their story that I forget to live my own story.

Kim K is a beautiful woman and so is her gang. But we will never be her. Like I said before: Kim Kardashians success doesn’t equal yours . We will never look like her. Nor will our success be the same as hers. And we don’t have to be the same. We don’t need to see her day to day life. She can still be a role model (Thought I would argue there are better ones out there).

Search for your own success! Not Kim. K; We have so much other potential!

I would love for young people to research all of the possibilities they have now. It doesn’t matter what the dream is. Own beauty line? Go ahead! Becoming a doctor? Yes! Being an influencer? Go ahead! But don’t think that all of this is going to be easy. Nothing in life is actually easy. We think if we would be millionaires all would be simple? All the screaming fans and haters and crazy people after us? Getting all we want at the snap of our fingers but always having to wonder if we actually deserve what we get or do we get it due to our name? It isn’t a coincidence that a lot of big, rich, famous stars lose it. Get on drugs or/and kill themselves.

Even the same path walked by two different people will sound totally different in their recollections. Even if they walk it a the same time.

Search for your own journey! Money is great, being famous enough to make sure you can help people in a bigger way etc is a great goal. There is nothing wrong with that. However, don’t romanticize anything. Being rich and famous because you acted dumb, isn’t a great place to be. Here is a bit more about the topic of successful people: Stars sentenced to death. Building a career and an empire on being a good person, now that is a GOAL.

My point writing this is that I want youngsters (I am 23 myself so I count myself into it) to concentrate on their own journeys. On writing their own stories. Reading about a scandal and laughing/crying at how the world is fucked up right now it fine. Once in a while. But being obsessed with peoples lives won’t help us live our own.

So to anyone who is searching for some life advice here is mine ;

Live YOUR life to the fullest and make it so great that when you are on your death bed, you won’t be afraid to die, because you know you actually lived!

How to successfully study (even if you aren’t at school)

So; I had a blog post poll and twitter and 2 post ideas got the same votes; the one I am writing about right now and “How to have conversations”. So I will make the post about conversations for next Monday. But today we will talk about how to study. While the title mentions that it isn’t for school, it can be applied to school as well. I just feel like even after we are done with school, we should still continue learning and this we need to know how to study; so here we go! (I will link bellow my own posts on similar topics and other resources to help you learn! )

Tip N.1; Choose one thing (Maybe two if they are different enough)

I feel like the most important part is to figure out what you want to study. I don’t think there is a good thing and a mad thing to study. You can study languages, math, culture, history, self development. What ever feels like your own.

However this poses a problem. You aren’t at school, so no one is going to give you a limit to what to study. It isn’t realistic to study all sub parts of all of the topics listed about (plus there is like 1000’s of more of them, that I just don’t have time to list). So as my tip suggest don’t choose too many things to study. Even if it seems very tempting.

You could study a language and history. That way they are different enough. If you study Spanish you might want to learn about Spanish history, because you might understand the culture better. But don’t choose too many things, just so you don’t feel overwhelmed. I am sure we all remember how stressful it was to learn everything for our finals, why would you do that to yourself on purpose, right?

Tip 2; How do you learn best?

Now that teachers aren’t thrusting a book into your had and telling you to read and learn 500 pages by heart. You can actually listen to yourself and figure out how you learn best. This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t use multiple methods, it means you should see what works the best and after that using the other methods to bring variety into your studies. Just because you like pasta the most doesn’t mean you can never eat anything else…right? So Figure out your tastes and start planning

Tip 3; Plan your learning

Learning can be a great way to pass time and relaxing without having to check your phone
Learning can be fun!

This doesn’t have to be as hardcore as at schools. You don’t have to know that by the end of tomorrow you have read chapters 1-5 from a book. But making sure you have some kind of a picture is important. If you work, are a stay at home mother or go to school and want to learn things outside of school, you should make sure you have time for the thing you want to study.

So check your calendar. Is 30 minutes a day realistic? How about 1 hour every other day? Maybe study what you want for couple of hours during the weekend. Or make it a part of your morning routine. You can easily wake up 15 minutes earlier and decide to study a little bit of vocabulary before getting up. Or do that during night time, this way your brain will process the info while you sleep. Either way, make sure you have time for what you want to learn. Trust me when I say it doesn’t work if you just plan on studying “when you feel like it” it didn’t work in school and it sure as hell won’t work now, because you won’t even have you finals to force you to study…

Tip 4; Figure out a why

Just being curious is a good thing, but it won’t last you for a long time and it won’t be something constant. Obviously there is nothing wrong about once in a while reading a fascinating article. However, if you want to seriously learn something, you should have a strong why. For example; I want to learn Spanish, because I have studied it for ages and I like the sound of it. The idea that I could one day have a conversation with a Spanish person seems fantastic and I think it will help me understand their culture. Since culture and languages are often closely linked. A while a go I learned, because I had family members in France. Just thinking the languages if fun, isn’t a bad reason. But it rarely is strong enough. However if it is good enough for you, great!

Nutrition and productivity

Have you noticed that on some days you are supper productive and efficient. You get an amazing amount of tasks done and you feel like you are on top of the world? But to balance those days out some days you have a feeling that a sloth could get more done and you are no smarter than an amoeba….sound familiar? For me too.

There are many reasons why you might have an unproductive/ sluggish day; lack of sleep, dehydration, lack of exercise. Then what we will concentrate on today; bad nutrition. Now before you start to attack me with your (pitch)forks, I would like to mention that your meals can be generally healthy and you still could be feeling like a blob. And if you can honestly say that you are healthy with your diet, hydration, sleep and fitness and you still feel bad; please contact a doctor. Heck contact them anyway. But for those people who can’t honestly claim even 90% healthy habits, this post is for them. (ME)

Through out history we have been developing and adapting. Many theories suggest that one of the biggest changes for us humans, and why we as a species have survived was first introducing fish and meat into our diet and then learning how to cook it as well. This however has within couple of decades turned against us. While I honestly believe that some fish and meat products in our diet can be healthy, I will be first one to admit that being mostly meat based is probably no the healthiest (especially not when it is part of fast food).

Heavy saturated fat based foods make us groggy as it is more difficult to digest, making the blood from our head go to our digestive system. On the other hand too many carbs/sugars makes us have a spike of energy and then we are all of a sudden very tired. Usually this is followed by us eating again or drinking coffee/energy drinks to get us back to being able to work. Then we crash again and it ends up being a vicious cycle.

How should we eat? I don’t think I can answer that without some disclaimers: 1) I am not a doctor, nutritionist nor have I researched the topic enough to promise miracle results. 2) I don’t think there is a diet that fits everyone (and I don’t think there are miracle diets). I can however suggest some things by what I have read. This is based on my research on what are healthiest foods for productivity A well balanced diet with healthy fats from nuts and seeds, avocados (can I hear a YAY from all the millennials) Some good carbs; for example vegetables, fruits, whole grains. And proteins from either plant sources, like legumes and if you aren’t vegan then some fish and lean meats. Now even if you are vegan I know you can have a balanced diet. Just don’t restrict yourself and remember to take supplements. Especially B12 and iron. B12 is very hard to get from plants only and iron while possible, is often something that will be lacking on a vegan diet.

Speaking of vitamins and minerals, some that are supposed to help with productivity are B-vitamins, vitamin D3 (D-vitamin deficiency is especially common in northern countries due to the lack of sun light, just keep that in mind, especially during winter months.) Omega 3 Fatty acids, vitamin C and magnesium. Most of these are reasonably easy to have in your diet. But if you have some dietary restrictions, like being vegan, not being able to eat fish or being allergic to some fruits/veggies with these vitamins/mineral, please do take the time to supplement. Productivity is a result of many things. Healthy lifestyle, good habits and systems that make it easier to do things than to procrastinate.

Everything wrong with school (My POV)

Education is great, teaching all the subjects that our society is prepared to teach kids (if you are born at a right time, to the right family with a right financial situation in the right country…) But there are many problems within teaching itself.  I would like to remind everyone reading that these issues I mention are purely my own experience and something I have noticed with friends or for example from YouTube videos.

One amazing YouTube video that is going to introduce you the issues with today’s schools, is this talk/rap by Prince EA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqTTojTija8 (The video state that Finland’s educational system is so ahead, and that may be the case, but it has been going down quite  a lot and even when it has been at its best it has had some issues. This coming from a Finnish student.)

So, what do I think that are the issues with schools; standardized tests, having a school class that looks the same as 150 years before, teachers not paid enough? What else?

We aren’t taught how to write good notes when we are young. Now, of course, everyone has their own way of making notes the best of the best for them. But while a lot of teachers assume we write notes for their classes no one teaches how to take them. This is not only something I find extremely frustrating. Sometimes teachers do lectures so very fast but never has bothered to explain how to make concise, smart notes that make sense after the lecture as well.

And people not knowing how to write good notes is very easy to notice on all the study tumblers, note taking videos on YouTube and so on. Students want answers, and who is better to push them in the right direction than schools and teachers who should know the most effective ways, right?

Science is against the way schools are now… but still, nothing changes? School starts early when science has proved that not everyone’s brain is functioning up to par in the mornings. Many very influential writers have a totally different schedule, they write when they are the most effective. Yet students are forced to wake up early and study very late.

Some lectures can last up to 3 hours if not more, sometimes pushing through with no breaks, so we get home earlier, but again studies indicate that people can’t concentrate more than 45 minutes at a time and that is on a good day.

Science proves chewing gum, doodling and fiddling with something during studying/listening can help concentrate, yet many teachers and parents tell the kids to stop being restless and “misbehaved”.

Speaking of being restless. If we go back to when I was in preschool or during my first years of “real” school, things weren’t that much better. We were assumed to sit through a class and concentrate, listen to the teacher and answer questions and not really get any reward for it per se.

Now let’s think about this realistically. Tell someone who can sit calmly and concentrate when they are under 10? When older than 10 years old’s have issues too. And WHY would we even make students study like this? I mean again studies prove that the brain goes into a standby mode when we are sitting for a long time and that is when the mind starts to wander or daydream. I am not saying that students shouldn’t learn how to concentrate for more than 5 minutes at a time. But the kid’s age should be considered and making studying active rather than passive, would probably help students learn more anyway.

So, not only do we take away the excitement from learning by making too many rules, but we also make those students learn less because physical movement literally helps walk the information into the brain.

Making us compete for a grade, instead of making us learn information. An A* or 5/5 if you study where I do, doesn’t mean anything, if after the exam you remember nothing. What if that same test would be held a couple of weeks later again, would we have anyone getting A’s then? Studying isn’t about the grade. It is about processing the information, making it part of us for the long-term and then, in a couple of weeks when we are taught something new, we get the moment of the light bulb going BLING – “This is relating to that thing A we learned 2 weeks ago.” This is what learning is about. Not if you know how to answer to A, B, C questions correctly after you learned your textbook by heart.

And one might argue that it is on the students to learn for themselves, and partly that is the case, but I would argue that the way we are taught, and the way society makes letters and numbers and GPA’s such a big deal, we are making studying off-putting. It makes students judge themselves by a number or a grade instead of how much they worked and how many BLING moments they had. And I can say that those BLING moments are satisfying af.

Look education is a right that every child is supposed to have, but not at the price of their identity. The right doesn’t include them feeling like shit because they aren’t as good as the math geek (total respect to that math geek) in their class and because the way they understand sciences isn’t the conventional way. All great breakthroughs in science, biology and even art were made by people who had the audacity to look outside the box. Einstein is told to have been quite bad at school, but he is one of the most known scientists in the world.

Changing the way schools are isn’t easy. But maybe we should start actually asking what do the students need. Even a simple question like, what did I miss when I was a student, is a great start. It would improve our student’s mental health a lot too. Making them see that their opinions matter.

In my humble opinion schools need to teach students to think for themselves. Not teach them to read everything by heart from the book. But make them analyze different information and come to a conclusion. Like playing Sherlock Holmes.  That is only the start though.

Simplify your studying

I know I know, it is summer, who the F talks about school stuff now? I do. 1st I would like to point out that you can study when ever and studying could be just for your own pleasure and not relating to school what so ever, but making it more simple is very beneficial, no matter what your reason for studying is. So let’s begin shall we?

  1. Make a choice and stick to it. I know it is hard to figure out what our most important subject is at school or what interests us the most outside school but in the end this doesn’t really matter. Just chose a subject and stick to it for 30min-1h. Take everything of your table that isn’t related to that subject and study it. In the end it doesn’t matter if it wasn’t the most “important” one. The goal is to at least start with something.
  2. Do not color code or doodle. Now this will be controversial tip, I know. So many people want their notes to be pretty, and that is great and if color coding and drawing helps you even better! BUT I would suggest to do the doodling and color coding at the end of your notes taking time. This way you can see it as a little treat for yourself, and going over your notes with different pens and drawing things relating to the subject will work as a review.
  3. Use back up sources. I at least myself would often just read a book and concentrate on learning things by hear. And if something was given as homework I felt like I should be able to understand everything without extra research, so I ended up not retaining information, I just learned stuff by heart (if I did). But googling or checking things from a dictionary isn’t a bad thing. It is okay not to know a word or not to understand a difficult concept say in physics or the like. So make it easier for yourself and just google it (or ask someone who knows the subject better….”Mooooom what’s 1+1)
  4. Do not plan too much. You will never make a perfect plan and in the end it just takes a lot of time. Prioritizing in the end is quite simple. 3 Exams coming up? Study for those 3 exams. Which one should be prioritized you ask? Either the one that is going to be first or the one you feel you know the least. The same applies to just normal homework, essays etc. During the school week concentrate on the subject that you have had at school that day. That way the lecture is fresh in your mind.
  5. Update your planner daily, that way you won’t need to have 2h long study planning sessions and you will just see everything in your planner.
  6. Remember to rest. No one can work non stop. And won’t do any favors to yourself if you over work yourself. Even Hermione Granger had a burn out in Harry Potter and of Azkaban book.

Remember that studying and learning should be a satisfying experience where your mind grows and your views broaden and you become better as a person. It is part of personal development. Do not ruin your studying by dreading it too much or making it out to be about life or death, when it is not. You can only do your best, and you know exactly what that is.
